I could give this film 3 and a half stars for the first part, but like everyone says the twist sucks hand cock and never really recovers. So basically I'm saying find some means of watching this movie for free and tune in for only about 30 to 45 minutes and then just stop.
This movie was really bad. The 20 mins in the beginning was the best, besides that it was crap. Highly disappointed in Will Smith!!!!!
not your typical superhero movie, but nice, nevertheless. hancock was both the hero and his own villain--annoying, yet very real. it was hilarious with a lot of heart. ^^
some very funny moments throughout this film, purely down to the casting which I thought was excellent.....a very unusual storyline that works only just though....but this is a film about a superhero right?......in other words....Good job!
Started off interesting, fucked up halfway and never managed to get itself back on track. A let-down.
This is probably the worst movie ever whith Will as the main character. Will is pretty ok but the movie was not too good. Sometimes a bit funny but in the end it all becomes fuzzy and too much fantasy...
It's a good movie. :) somewhat different "hero" movie. where the hero is far from perfect, a nice turn
A terrific movie with a not-so-popular premise pulled of very well. Add an amazing score by John Powell, and you have an amazing film.
I liked it enough it has it's moments. Will Smith is good as Hancock a Superhero with some very super problems. Jason Bateman is great as usual he has become one of my favorite actors to watch since I saw him in Juno. Jason plays the role of a salesman who decides he should try to straighten out Hancock. Their is some good comedy in it and their is kind of a neat little twist in the movie. It is worth a viewing not the best Superhero movie by any means, but good.
after watching this movie, i realized that superhero doesn't have to wear his brief outside his dress..haha
On paper, Hancock has promise: a drunken superhero who halfheartedly saves the day with a devil-may-care attitude, could provide a nice counterbalance to the secret life of a superhero. But about halfway through, the film gets rid of its interesting premise and settles for a origin tale that is baffling at best, and stupid at worst. It's narrative is cloggy and odd, as for a superhero pic there isn't much action to behold and the script basically gives no one anything to work with. That's a problem when your main character is basically a lush version of Superman, as it could've provided a nice satirical tone on the perception of superheroes, or least have some fun with it.
Unfortunately, with the premise thats supposed to draw audiences in gone and basically very few action scenes to hold much interest, Hancock can't seem to stay together without characters to care about and actors who can't quite pull it together. Whats more disappointing is that Peter Berg is apart of this mess. He directed the very good Friday Night Lights and the Rundown. Whatever good will he garnered with those flicks is almost erased by his script, which is not only dumb by itself but the doctoring by no less than 4 other writers makes it worse. making the film not only undercooked but overdone.
The acting is a bit of a mixed bag. Will Smith struggles from time to time, obviously an effect from a tonedeaf script, but is his usual engaging self. Charlize Theron is worst of the bunch, however, as her character who is quite simply terribly conceived. Her role goes from annoying to simply implausible by the time the plot twist kicks in. Jason Bateman turns out to be a bit of a saving grace, at least in the first half, but is pushed out of the way during the second half, with the script ignoring him constantly.
Overall, despite Bateman's valiant attempts to save this turd, Hancock is half-cocked with with too many vague, uninteresting ideas, uneven acting, boring action scenes, and quite simply the worst origins for any superhero. Avoid at all costs.

It wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be. Different story, and a good one, but it could have been played out better. Will Smith is great though
Totally blockbuster,Will is great like always,it's funny but not very much,i liked it it has very good idea,

another super hero who doesn't get as much credit b'cus of his morals...he later gets recruited by the force n soon realises he has a super hero partner! a must see will smith movie...
I would love to read the first draft of Hancock. The movie's been in and out of production for over a decade and has probably gone through, I dunno, maybe 60 drafts of the script. And I gaurentee with each and every draft, the script became more and more focused on pointless action scenes, and less and less interested with comedy and actually telling a coherent story. As a pitch, Hancock is brilliant - an alcoholic superhero who messes up so much trying to save the world that everyone hates him and want him out. What a great movie idea. Unfortunately, the film isn't remotely interested in this idea, and the last half of the film is completely incoherent, ridiculous, and filled with endlessly silly action scenes.
That's not to say the first half is all that great, either. But it contains a certain amount of clever insight that is otherwise lacking in the final half. Will Smith is solid, as usual. It's good casting, because everyone and his goldfish seems programmed at birth to love Will Smith, so even when we see Hancock being a major alcoholic douchebag, we're rooting for him. Jason Bateman is also good as the PR man willing to help Hancock's image after he saves his life from an ongoing train (don't train tracks in LA have those roadblock things come down so you don't wind up parking on the tracks?). Charlize Theron is pretty awful, if for no other reason than she's the most transparent character I've ever seen. If you've ever read any reviews of this movie, you know that clearly she is "not what she seems". Well, for fuck's sakes, that's not only obvious within the first scene of the movie (and every one after, because she always is staring so intently at Hancock it's obvious they have a history), but hell, I knew this twist just from watching the TRAILER, where they showed a shot of an evil looking Charlize taking off her shades....which sort of proves she's not gonna just be the good little housewife throughout.
I'm sure Hancock started, in the beginning, as a comedy. And that's how it should've stayed. The opening half is never really laugh out loud funny, but I have to admit there is some amusing pleasure derived from seeing a drunk Will Smith throw a pudgy kid up in the air. But even in this opening half, where the film is at it's most successful, it's a very muddled and bizarre flick. It never seems to know if it's a comedy or if it wants to play it straight; which, usually speaking, signals studio interference. Hancock being taken to prison should've been a ripe moment for comedy, but strangely it's very rarely played for laughs. Peter Berg, the director, films the movie as if it's a highly dramatic action/thriller, with shaky cameras and gritty photography, and while that approach worked for his pesudo-documentary action thriller The Kingdom, it just feels out of place here. This is, at it's heart, a relatively light hearted story - or, if need be, it could've been taken a darker route. But Berg seems to want both, so while we're subjected to a comedy scene were Hancock literally shoves a man's head up another's ass, Berg's camera makes everything look and feel like The Bourne Ultimatum. It just doesn't work. Personally, I think the film would've worked better as an all-out comedy, instead of this neutered cross-breed.
But it's the ending, and by that I mean the last 45 minutes, where everything falls apart (hmm, reminds me of I Am Legend...maybe Will Smith only reads the first half of every script he signs on for). As I said earlier, and as everyone else on the planet has mentioned, the twist involving Charlize was a laughable waste of time, and very easily predicted. But it got dumber (let's just say SPOILER WARNING now, as I'm gonna have to talk fairly in depth about what happens in the end to clearly telegraph how fucking stupid it is). First we find out Hancock and Charlize were man and wife, created as pairs or something, by somebody, and they're immortal. 80 years ago, Hancock got hit on the head, recieved amnesia, and Charlize avoided him for the rest of their lives. Now, you'd think people would've noticed an immortal with superpowers before this modern time in LA, but no. And you'd think someone able to heal any injuries of his own would be able to heal convienently-placed amnesia. But no again. And the movie continually changes it's own ridiculous rules that they set up, usually just the scene prior to blowing it up again, and only to force drama and action scenes into a movie that never really needed it in the first place. We're told, about 15 minutes before the end of the film, that Hancock is losing his powers and becoming mortal. This is apparently because when the "old pairs" are together, aka him and Charlize, they become mortal. But....but....BUT THEY WERE SHARING SCENES FOR THE WHOLE MOVIE. THEY JUST HAD A MASSIVE FIGHT DOWNTOWN THREE SCENES EARLIER. And they never lost their powers then. Hell, Hancock and her have been living in the same city for years - surely at some point he would've flown past a building she was in and, whoops, down he goes, losing his powers? So this plot idea was literally shoehorned in the last minute to add some drama - "omg, Hancock's becoming mortal, he's gonna die". Which is bullshit, of course. And it gets even dumber, believe it or not. In the last remaining minutes, the way Hancock's struggle is intercut with Charlize's, it appears that she feels whatever physically happens to him. Excuse me? Wouldn't that mean that everytime he was hit by a train earlier that she would've randomly felt like she, too, was smacked by a huge vehicle? This isn't something explored or mentioned at all in the movie, until literally the second last scene. Ridiculous. And the film is so desperate to make this ending exciting, it drags in a villian, kicking and screaming, who had no idea Hancock was now mortal but, lucky for him, this just happened to be the day he decides to break out of prison and try to shoot Hancock. He's even given a claw for a hand, to make this pudgy Brit-doing-a-bad-Texan-accent seem remotely threatening. Absolutely ridiculous.
Anyways. Hancock is a very misguided, muddled, confused, disjointed, and all around pointless film. The fact that the first half is so harmless and kinda likeable makes me give it 2 stars, and in all honesty it's a very competently made film. But the last half is inexcusably dumb. The first draft probably was very funny, very interesting, very thoughtful. It probably dealt with Hancock's discovery of immortality, of the consequences superheroes would have in the real world, and how funny that could possibly be. It most likely developed it's characters and gave them interesting things to say and believeable things to do. But sadly, this version of Hancock is most definitely not the first draft - it's a studio rape-job. Enjoy.
I actually saw, though I had intentions of seeing it... it had a few silly moments. Entertained me for the duration of the film.
I really enjoyed this movie...as usual Will Smith makes it a good one. He starts out as a real bumbling super hero and turns into one you can count on. Love the toss with the mouthy kid btw. The ending was a big surprise. A must see as far as I'm concerned.
It really proves that you don't have to make a good movie to be successful in Hollywood, just a half good movie.
I liked it. I had low expectations so I was not disappointed ;) although it was the weakest performance from Will Smith and Charlize Theron in quite awhile (I do like both of them). But it was not too bad for a sci-fi. Not a kids movie but not enough to make it really adult enough. Seems to really be for 13 year old I guess who use strong language, but I guess I did when I was 13. The movie is cheesy and somewhat fun. Jason Bateman nails his character, but he always does. I know we would all love a chance at another hour and a rewrite of the script, but hey can't win em all. Whatever
It was alright. It could've been better. I just expected more from a great sounding movie like this.
i really enoyed it, it was original in a lot of ways. will smith really does provide outstanding roles in these recent years

I think it will be awesome cause will smith in it.........
I love action movies. Haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I've seen on the previews, it looks like a great movie, something that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I love watching Will Smith because in his own way, he gets a little comedic with it, like he's not afraid to change the story lines, push the limit a little bit. He's very mannly and handsome!!
Of course its not i am legend 2, and their not going to make i am legend 2, smith died at the end of i am legend
Will Smith played a excellent super hero in this movie. He was very inept in the beginning, but became very talented as a super hero at the end. Def a great movie to check out.
