Plot: The trials and tribulations of a New Jersey convenience store clerk and his best friend, a video store employee.
Kevin Smith's debut feature, made on the lowest of budgets, is made artistically in black-and-white and is dependant on dialogue and plot to create good humour. The relationship between clerks Dante and Randall is another strength and the support characters Jay & Silent Bob provide excellent comedy also.
on the one hand, this film is filled with insightful and brilliant social commentary. on all the other hands, there are many things about this movie i disliked very much. the acting was insulting, the diologue was silly, the story was slow, and too much of the "funny" moments were more absurd than funny. as a commentary it was great, as a movie it was poor.
Just a long string of quasi-philosophical discussions by self righteous film maker Kevin Smith. For some reason this film has become something of a cult movie in stoner circles. I suppose you'd have to be stoned to enjoy this. It would take something a hell of a lot stronger than weed to make me watch this again.
This movie had incredible dialogue, hands down. Working in the same industry, many of these conversations have come up before. Plus, the entire indie approach/feel without coming off as pretentious.
The first time i watched this i had to sneak it into my room to watch it cause i wasn't sure my parents would let me watch it, but now they're like she's seen worse.
Yes,it does look like a student's film but it's a dream/nightmare for every studio you will come upon. It's bawdy, stupendous one-liners,joint with an anarchic beauty.Too bad mr Smith never gave us another option to admire his subsequent work. One of 94's greatest.
Just watched it again last night in IFC and seems like every time I watch it, I find something that makes me appreciate it a little bit more..
My husband had me watch this movie and I loved it. Definitely my "blaze" movie if I were a stoner lol
Some of the best dialogue i've ever heard. A movie like this could have been boring if not executed correctly..the whole movie is dialogue but there isn't a boring part. A good twist on how someone at a dead end job can end up taking things for granted. Can't wait to view Kevin Smith's other films, he really has a knack for how people really talk and act, good job Kevin
A witty, and thought provoking movie with conversations about Star Wars... get out of my head Kevin Smith! :)
The original Kevin Smith movie. This movie is a classic and a must have for anyone in my generation.
Great first film for Kevin Smith. Though I still prefer Mallrats. This movie help set the continuing story of characters in the other films.
A really funny film about the people who work at convenience stores and the dumb customers you have to talk to.
It took while to get going and the acting is terrible but i guess you can excuse that because its a cast of unknowns. When it did eventually get going it was very funny and the dialogue was very good.
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is definatley in my top 10, and it's just GENIUS!!! Long live Kevin Smith!!
Which did you like better? Jedi or The Empire Strikes Back?
Empire
Blasphemy!
Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets.
I feel good today, Silent Bob, we're gonna make some money, then you know what we're going to do? We're gonna go to that party, we're gonna get some pussy, and I'm gonna fuck this bitch, I'ma fuck this bitch, I'll fuck ANYTHING THAT MOVES! Yo, what the fuck you lookin' at, I'll kick your fuckin' ass! Shit yeah. Doesn't that fucker owe me 10 bucks? You know, fuckin' tonight, we're gonna rip off this fucker's head, and take out his fuckin' soul. Remind me if he tries to buy something, I'm gonna shit in the motherfucker's bag. Hey, what's up baby? What's up, sluts?
spawned the start of the most awful comedy duo in history, god damn this film was pretty comical mind
If the disgruntled, adolescent, group sub-conscious of the 90's had a vocabulary and ability to emote this would be the movie it would write. Kevin Smith immediately came on the scene as a master of dialogue. Sure it's dirty, but that doesn't make it unintelligent.
Though the script is really hilarious, I found the acting in this movie to be horrid. I know that the budget was small, but come on...
Muito Bom!!
É um tipo de filme que mostra a vida pacata de cidadőes aparentemente normais, mas que acaba se mostrando uma bela comédia muito boa de se ver!
I'm sorry...I can't get into Kevin Smith movies...with the exception of dogma...I know...I know...it makes me a freak
It was ok, I guess. I failed to understand the purpose of this, but it was kind of cool at times, like the argument about the 2nd Death Star in Star Wars. Anyway, I know that in a week I'll completely forget about watching this.
I've tried to watch this a few times.... It just didn't hold up to my expectations. One of those 80's flicks that all my peers loved and I kept watching to find out why sooo much.
Never understood its cult-status. The movie is messy, fails to give me any laughs. I'm not sure if it's because of the lame script or the wooden acting. Given it's filmed on a low-budget does not excuse it for being lousy. Sorry.
This movie is all about talking, but the dudes at Clerks have some really honest and sometimes raunchy things to say about pop culture and life. One of the greatest bridges between art house and big studio stuff. A good script and fair acting helps.

MightyShort, you're a terrible, terrible person! "its black and white!" oh my god!hahah
Seminal? Christ. Think for yourselves, folks, and don't just agree with whatever pot-smoking morons happen to dribble their opinions.
This clumsy and embarrassing student film doesn't have a single worthwhile idea. "People who work in shops are bored!" God, really? Get this man a Nobel Peace Prize.
The acting is horrifying. The direction is half-assed. Also, the dialogue is the worst I have *ever* heard. Humans do not talk like that.
It's black and white! It has words like "Catharsis" against black screens! Like, we make Star Wars jokes too! Well it *must* be a work of genius, then...
Sex jokes + Star Wars jokes / Drugs jokes, Repeat. A formula for a career.
